I can't answer this question. You can make own variable by means
of global block or use already existing ones for other purpose.

Yep, CP -> Customize Design -> TopRight -> Global Blocks.

If I remember correct, max were 10 blocks.

Hmmm the Global Blocks bit is really interesting.... What's worrying me is that I need to find a way to determine if a user posts a new forum entry, comment, etc so that I can count his / her overall points....

Why new? You can create system, like if forum messages xxx then points xxx.
And if forum messages xx points decrease to xx. And other feature pluses on.

It needs to be like that to avoid attaching itself too much to the other modules' count. So that it has a storage of it's own. It just needs to get points from user's actions and nothing else.. That way, it can better protect the points of users in many aspects.

Yes, I agree. Hmm... you need some sort of inside database storing file for each user.
