mribbiza, this depends on the nature of the backlink, whether they're considered valuable/quality links or whether they're seen by search engines as spammy and what not. There's a lot of complex equations and algorithms which search engines use to determine your standing within their records so the best thing to do is let your site grow naturally and do your best to keep it active, updated, and make sure there's quality and original content on there.
