404.htm (Cant figure out how to set my 404.htm)

I want to close my page for maintanance through the 404.htm but I dont know how. I know how to change it but I dont know how to set it so that when i go to my page, it will go to that page that usually says "HTTP 404 Not Found". I need help.

I dont actually know how to use the redirection code. And if I did, where would i put it at. Can you plz gimme a descript explaination instead of a link to another thread.
