File type for File Catalog Module (Question)

I think this post belongs to Customs Coding rather than File Catalog Module so I post in here.
I have an e-book site. I would like the system auto get the file type when I upload the e-book. Could the system define the file type by the last 3 character of file. How to custom this code?
